Symbol of Resilience|Damascus Rose
Madiha, a mother of three kids, comes from Palmyra. Lying to the northeast of Damascus, Palmyra was very prosperous before the outbreak of the civil war. Taking care of her kids is the most important thing in Madiha’s life, but during her spare time she loves to do hand embroidery, which she learned from her mother. Tragically, the outbreak of the civil war and the subsequent spread of the Islamic State profoundly affects the lives of civilians. Madiha had to embroider day and night to support her family, and sometimes her eyes were just exhausted. However, she still earned so little money, 20-50 lire ( 3USD) per month, that she can’t afford the tuition fee for her son. Her son could get into medical school, but the tuition fee was too high for Madiha (annual tuition fee of 3000 lire/174USD). Ultimately, her son studies mechanical engineering and becomes a part-time carpenter.
This year, Madiha is introduced by her friend to the Founding Director of the Taiwan Centre, Mr. Chiu. She thought the Taiwan Centre would be the same as her previous experiences. To her surprise, when Mr. Cho saw her works, he said wholeheartedly,
“Fantastic! Would you like to collaborate with our centre?”
This time, Madiha gets what she deserves!
The blossoming flower embroidered by Madiha is not only beautiful but also reflects the power of women.
“Embroidery is art. After being forced to flee, I embroidered to support my family. This Damask rose means a lot to me. It symbolizes Syria. When I embroider it, I think of my home and forget about the pain and difficulties. I hope this Damask rose can reach every corner of the world and let everyone knows how Syrian women love their home!” said Madiha.
We sincerely hope that thousands of women like Madiha can transform their lives.
